Brief Introduction to game genres!

Before we dig deep into Game Genres - initially we shall sort, what actually GENRE is?
A genre is a classification subject/topic ranging from Historical,Mythology,Sci-fi,story-telling to Mech's world(like Transformers,Giant Robots),adventurous etc., Game Genres are mere similar to TV-series & Films/Movies whether they are Shorts' or long-run movies. But what differentiates 'Game genre' to other entertainment medium genres ??

Let's dichotomize quickly - Its simply a mixture of both Game genre + Story genre.




Story Genre - Story genre merely comprises of story intriguing elements whether it is taking place in ancient world dating to B.C.E,A.D, like prince of Persia series (Babylon),Assassins creed series (Rome,china etc) or say modern-existing centenarian era like Farcry series( Indian and pacific oceans,Himalayas,Hope county) and Wolfenstein series (WW2,Nazi era) to the Future-galaxical and interstellar travel theme game stories like Mass effect andromeda all need Massively interesting and compiling stories to make the player immersed into fictional realm of Game world.

Game Genre - Game Genre directly relates to the type of game-play it is involved,Sounds confusing! puzzling!!? Lets take an example of Watch-Dogs game series,the basic game-play of it is to Hack computers,smart phones,cameras,alarms or any other electronic peripherals.So to be at basic level its a 'Game-Genre of Hacking' (though there other sub-genres and hybrid genres involved in Watch-Dogs series).A Game Genre tell us the topic of game-play it is inculcated with complex  subjects like Action,adventure etc..which we are going to talk about in moment.

  1. Action - Action based games are very popular, the player needs to have good eye-hand coordination to excel at these type of games.

    Eg: Prince of persia series,Mortal kombat series etc.

  2. Adventure - Adventure games usually takes place in some exotic islands,oceans or countries etc.,the adventure plot games will have gameplay duration when compared it with purely action based because they stick to story type.

    Eg: Journey(2012) ,Uncharted series,Farcry series etc.

  3. Board - Usually these genre games do not fall into the pit of AAA titles,generally they are made suitable for casual players(like your Mom,Dad or Grandfather). These Games focus mainly focus on tactics like divide and Conquer,plan and invade. Though these games are short in Game production cycle,they have high gameplay value.

    Eg: Monopoly,Chess,Go,Ludo etc.

  4. Shooter - Like Action based games,this genre also requires high standards of reflexes such as Aiming,shooting and Quick time events.Shooters are the most dominative game genres for PC's(Personal computers) with the advent of great peripheral device like keyboard and mouse.

    Eg: Call of Duty series,Counter strike series,Battlefield series etc.

  5. Simulation - Simulation games are the 'deceptive imitation of a situation' of the player in the virtual Game world, just like the End-player wants to act in real-life. To discuss it more elaborately take an example of SIMS series where the player can have his/her own game-lifestyle,family,friends and relationships just like we humans have in real-realm.

    Eg: Sims series,Farming simulators,Theme hospital(1997),Prison Architect(2015).

  6. Vehicle Simulation - Like simulation 'Vehicle Simuls' are deceptive imitations of a situation,where in-here the player is simulated with virtual controls of vehicles to ride a cars,spacecraft,bikes,roller coaster or any other automobile.

    Eg - Needforspeed series, Kerbal space program(2015),MotoGP series etc.
  7. Puzzle - Puzzles are directly categorized to solve logic's, reasoning,observation,riddles etc.Puzzles require high amounts of concentration and try-n-error methods.Yet the result when you solve them and if its correct, then the satisfaction is worth rewarding  and is great in numbers which cannot be stated in a sentence. 

    Eg:Jig-saw puzzle, Tetris, Candy crush saga, Portal series etc.

  8. Party - Party Games are those which are usually played by more than two players.This genre games are fairly developed and played, though there a quite good games on its label.
    Eg: Rocket league(2015),Just Dance series etc.

  9.  Sports - Probably this genre is never require an introduction because its straightforward in stating.

    Eg: EA Cricket series,FIFA series,NFL,NHL,Olympic games etc.

Strategy - strategy games usually require high amounts of patience since they are really slow-space during early-plays but once they are in Mid-n-Late plays,the real fun begins.Strategy games are nerve wrecking and require good analytical and planning skills to evade and conquer the enemies base /territory,though there are many of its titles related to Wars and civilization,there are quite few great strategy games for Cards(Hearthstone,scrolls etc).

    Eg: Rise of the nation series,Age of empires series,Dota series,Starcraft etc.

  11. Rhythm - Rhythm games usually represent to music world type of games.These are generally fast placed games which are also require good eye-n-hand coordination skills.sometimes rhythm games few monotony because there's same game-replay value which is quite boring sometimes.  
    Eg : Guitar band battle,Rock Band etc

  12. Education - The main purpose of this genre is to educate the people through 'Gamification' principle,these games usually do not promote win/loss conditions,there moto is to provide knowledge and intellectual via the medium games.These type of games are popular  in mobile game markets.

Decoding the Design of Prince of Persia (2008) & Review
